The Somerset Woodworkshop

About My Work

Having always been the top of the class in woodwork at school, completed A levels and an arts foundation course, it was obvious to me that making and designing furniture was in my blood. After gaining a 2:1 degree in furniture design my first employment was at Kilkenny Design Workshops in Ireland where I was involved in the design and manufacture of furniture. I then moved to London where I worked for Woodstock Ltd producing handmade kitchens and also as a modelmaker for The Wurr Company in London making precise handmade models (to be photographed for advertising in national press). It was during this time that some of my work was published in Terence Conran's House Book. With this background and experience in 1988 the time seemed right to set up my own business. Originally based in Bedford, I relocated with my familly to Taunton in 2007.

Materials & Finishes

I choose not to use rainforest timbers. For the most part, pieces are constructed from hardwoods such as maple, oak, cherry and walnut from sustainable sources, together with veneered or man made boards.

Hardwood pieces are generally finished in a durable sprayed lacquer. If a painted finish is required, I would recommend the use of moisture resistant MDF during construction. Pieces are then given four coats of paint (each rubbed down by hand), which can be applied with a roller to give a professional eggshell finish or traditionally brushed. If a distressed finish is preferred, water based paints with top coats of matt polyurethane are used.
